Analysis of Blogging Survey Conducted with Room One and Three Students
Our findings:
- Students know how to access a variety of web tools that are useful for blogging
- The majority of students find posting on their blog relatively easy
- There is a minority of students who associated blogging with learning and sharing this with people they know
- Some could identify how it has impacted on their learning by explainging how they have developed initiative and how they have learnt to access information with greater independence
- One student commented that blogging allowed him/her to get feedback and comments
- Two students found blogging easier than using pen and paper
- By far the greatest comment was that blogging has made them aware of a range of sites that they have accesses to.
All comments were positive towards using blogs however we felt that students need to be more aware of blogging for learning, not just for filling in time and making posts that are directed by the teacher.
We intend to work on:
- reinforcing the purpose for blogging at school
- getting students to comment on their peers' work
- getting parents to make regular comments on their child’s blog
- having a regular time for blogging
- ensuring that postings cover the 3 R’s
- using a range of tools for postings e.g voice instead of paper/pen
To do this we need to encourage the students to be more reflective by asking them questions about their learning and develop a criteria for making comments on blogs.
Hi team - it was apparent to me last year that the digiclass kids weren't that motivated to get involved in blogging as they left virtually no comments on the blog stuff i set up for and with them in class while i was there. when i was in the classroom i found following through with discussing the kids blogs, posts and comments on the class blog whilst on the data projector, a motivating way to get them going. also weekly blogging champ award for most meaningful comments or posts. pointing out the international audience and encouraging interaction with other classes - especially overseas - also helped.
